The blueprint

Looking back, I realize design has always been a constant in my life. I absorbed diverse design aesthetics from my culture and others, but it was music that sparked my creativity and sense of being.

I started DJing in middle school and began producing sample-based music in high school.

What's interesting is that the music production process shares many similarities with the design process, both:

  • Involve iteration, layering, and refinement until cohesive and impactful.

  • Need a keen eye (or ear) for elements to form a balanced and compelling whole.

  • Depend on understanding structure, rhythm, and harmony.

  • Guide an end-to-end journey that tells a clear story.

  • Drive memorable experiences through collaboration.

The remix

Later in life, I returned to school to pursue a degree in Visual Communications. To support my family, I worked as a bartender and drove for ride-sharing services. It was during those rides I first learned about UX from VCs and designers.

Sparked by those conversations, my curiosity led me to study cognitive behavior psychology, mental models, and universal design patterns outside school, which deepened my understanding of human behavior in products. Additionally, I learned about the business side of building products through Designer Fund workshops, helping me better understand how to align design and business.

After earning a B.S. in Visual Communications, I spent my first two years establishing myself as a Visual Designer. Then, I had the opportunity to transition to UX at First Republic Bank, where I put my knowledge into practice and expanded my skills.
